Inside each of Ernesto Neto’s environments there is an exoskeleton, made up of relations of comparison: between models of growth and sets of vascularized volumes. An organic, sensitive and contemporary vision of the concept of morphogenesis. In its resemblance to biology, Animal Architecture (Arquitetura animal, 2001) hints at the certainty of the existence of planets that are stateless with respect to the Earth. There where there are generative groupings and evolutionary schemes capable of entrapping drop-shaped stalactites, suspended and bent back on themselves like excrescential expressions. Components that evolve into structured systems, following the iconography of knowledge with its ramifications, landscapes and undefinable civilizations.
To discern the generative, synesthetic composition of Animal Architecture inner space (espaço entre) must be used. A void that is as pertinent to the work itself as it is, without any distinction, to the visitor. Reflected and dually perceptive architectural passages that offer a continuous osmotic exchange, between environment and human being, thanks to the porosity of the veils. Structures that are able to fix gravity and, at the same time, emit, in measured doses, the fragrances of the spices they contain; like cloves and cumin, placed at the barycentre of balances with irregular multiplicities. Ernesto Neto’s installation at Icastica is one of the Brazilian artist’s most exemplary works in Europe, both for its size and for its physical presence. A surface with speleological cavities represented in the form of a complex corporeal system. An evolutionary organism that sums up in itself the split between nature and sculpture, healing it.
